Harrisburg, PA’s ABC WHTM-TV reports that researchers at the Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation (SWAN) have developed a scoring system that can forecast significant health risks for women between the ages of 55 and 65. The prototype tool, known as the SWAN Seven Score, is the first of its kind to predict global health issues for women in this age group up to a decade in advance.
This can greatly encourage timely health interventions that prevent the risk from becoming a reality. The scoring system evaluates seven risk factors such as lower educational attainment, smoking, and history of cardiovascular disease.
“There are other widely used risk scores for specific diseases, but this is the first one to predict risk of global health issues for any woman age 55 to 65,” said lead researcher Dr. Daniel H. Solomon.
In order to make the scoring system more accessible, the research team is developing findings into an online calculator. This tool will be valuable for both healthcare providers and the public, allowing individuals to assess their own risk and make informed decisions about their health.
